We have had several kids in our classroom that have had the stomach bug and my 21 yr old came home this morning from working a double shift at the nursing home and told me he is sick. Needless to say I bleached and sanitized pretty much the whole house! I have been trying to open the windows to air out our classroom and clean/sanitize whatever we can, and hopefully with only week left of school in December the virus will be gone!
This past week we worked on letters Ee and Ff, numbers 41 and 42, the rectangle shape and the word "run". I really tried to make the cinnamon applesauce "dough" to make ornaments but no matter what I did, the dough came out too sticky to roll out. Luckily I was rummaging through my cabinet and drawers in the classroom and found an old tub of white clay and some leftover terra cotta clay from our Thanksgiving pots so we used the clay to make roll out and cut the ornaments! We had our first book of the week, called "Underwater Dogs" and it had beautiful pictures of dogs playing under water!
We are really working on the word respect....respect for yourself and each other and to respect the differences we see in others. We have been talking about how we are all different with hair color, eye color, what foods we like to eat, how we like to play and that it's okay to not have the same opinion as someone but that doesn't make that persons opinion wrong. I am hoping to help them understand that not everyone is going to agree with them or want to play with the same things or the same way they want to and that's okay and to either find a mutual way to do things or do them by yourself. We have a lot of strong personalities in our classroom and they don't like to back down or refuse to try things a friend wants to do and insist upon only playing or doing things their way and while this is typical of this age group, they need to learn how to compromise, negotiate and sometimes do things a friend wants to do instead of always doing it their way. Spending their free time arguing with a friend is not just wasting their play time but it's stressful for them and stressful for the other kids in the classroom who are listening to their friends argue over a block, crayon or toy phone. Learning life skills that will carry them throughout adulthood are so important to help them get along in personal relationships, school and in the workplace.
This week we will be working on letters Gg and Hh, numbers 43 and 44, the word "go", the trapezoid shape and our Bible verses will be John 4:26 " I am the Messiah" and mark 16:15 " Go into the world and preach the Good News to everyone." We will be putting the finishing touches on our ornaments, reading Christmas stories and discussing the birth of Jesus. Also we will be doing ten frames (adding two sets of numbers/pictures that equal 10), graphing, counting by tens and "counting on"...which means you start counting at any given number instead of 0 or 1, you might start counting at number 5 and continue counting.

Weather this time of year is very unpredictable and can be 65 degrees one day and 25 and windy the next. We go outside every day unless it is pouring rain, really hot or really cold (below 25 degrees) Please make sure your child is wearing appropriate clothing for cold weather and have appropriate coats and shoes to wear when we go outside. Wal-Mart has their hat/glove sets out and I usually recommend parents pick up one of those $1/$2 hat/glove sets to keep in their tub at school. This way you know they have it for school and don't have to bring one back and forth every day. We don't keep extra hats and gloves for the kids and don't let the kids share hats. An extra pair at school comes in handy!
With the change of the seasons, please change out your child's extra set of clothes and include pants and a long sleeve shirt.
If your child has been sent home sick or has been sick at home, they may not return to school until they have been fever, vomiting and diarrhea free for 24 hours without medication. This is to help prevent the other children and staff from becoming sick as well.
If you would like to pack your child's lunch for them, per our food program guidelines, please make sure they bring a nutritiously balanced lunch including fruit and/or veggies and some protein. If you pack them juice, it has to be labeled 100% juice or we can not give it to the children.
Chapstick, Germ-X and lotions for dry skin are not allowed in the classroom or in the reach of other children. If your child wants to use these things, please make sure they use it before coming to school or you can apply it to them when they arrive at school.
Please do not bring toys from home unless it is your child's leader day. We have plenty of toys and activities going in our classroom and the extra toys will be put in your child's tub.
