Today is World Autism Awareness Day. Our second son was diagnosed when he was 10 years old and in 5th grade. He started showing some non-typical behaviors when he was 3 years old. We took him from doctor to therapist and back and forth and we were given many diagnosis that didn't really seem to fit. He was put on medications that didn't do anything but make him lose his appetite and lose weight. The symbol for Autism is a puzzle piece and this is exactly why. There are so many different things that seem like Autism but are not and many times Autism goes hand in hand with other diagnosis. Our son was diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder in third grade, 2 years before his Autism diagnosis. Autism wasn't widely recognized when we were going through this process with Michael and he was becoming frustrated as well as my husband and I. Fortunately my husband listens to NPR radio and heard a story about Asperger's Syndrome and we researched it and ended up at the TEACCH Ctr in Asheville where he received his diagnosis of Autism. At that point all he wanted to be was just like the other kids and I made it my life's mission to help him achieve that goal. Within 2 years he had no more I.E.P's or 504 educational plans at school, was a starting forward on the middle school soccer team and then the JV and Varsity kicker for football and was working at Ghost Town at the age of 15 running the Red Dog Saloon by himself. He has since graduated from college, is married, has a new puppy and left Con-Met to work at Evergreen. I tell this story because we are so proud of him and his accomplishments and not letting Autism stop him from doing whatever he wants to do in life. Please light up blue or wear blue today in honor of those with Autism!
We will be closed on April 13 and 14 for spring break and observance of Good Friday.
Please make sure your child has a complete change of clothes in their cubby. You might want to bring in some clothes for spring type weather as well. Some of our days have been really warm!
Please make sure your child's water bottle is labeled each day with their name and current date.
Please keep toys at home unless it is your child's leader day or it is their toy for rest time.
Picture Days are April 24th and 25th. If your child attends Tues/Thurs that will be the day their pictures will be taken. If you have a sibling that does not attend our school but you would like have their picture take as well, please talk with Kathy in the office.
We will be having graduation cap/gown pictures taken as well as spring pictures. If you have a girl having pictures taken, please make sure there are no big bows or high ponytails, etc. The caps fit snugly on their heads and any bumps and lumps in the hair prevent the cap from fitting properly.
