Last week we finally were able to get back in the swing of things and we worked on letters Ii and Jj, numbers 45 and 46, the rhombus shape and the sight words "saw". We did a science experiment with water, color fizzy tablets and tiny crystals that absorbed the water and grew to be big colored crystals! For an art project we used Ivory soap shavings and glued them onto a polar bear to create his fur and painted snowmen on metallic paper using a 50/50 mix of shaving cream and glue which creates a puffy paint when the paint dries! Our book of the week was "Bad Dog, Marley", which is part of a series of books written by John Groban who writes his stories about his Labrador Retriever, Marley. When the snowflakes started coming down on Wednesday we went outside for a walk and tried to catch snowflakes on our tongues. Most of the flakes landed in our hair instead of on our tongues! Our Kindess Doll "caught" several friends doing some kind things...without being asked or telling me they did kind things for their friends. The "penalty flags" seem to be working as well, with the visual of the yellow flag reminding them to stop what they are doing and make better choices.
This week (weather permitting!) we will be working on letters Kk and Ll, numbers 47 and 48, the octagon shape, the word was and the Bible verse Matthew 4:19. We will be doing some "counting on" (starting at a given number and counting on), counting by tens, reading stories about snow and cold weather animals and hopefully be able to use our passports to learn about China.( I am waiting for a book to be shipped to me) My husband was in Milan for three weeks for the project to wrap up as "go live" to get it all going and he just returned to Pittsburgh and will be heading back out in two weeks for a follow up visit, so we are going to travel on without him! He is not a camera person like me but I have been able to convince him to start taking some and send them to me so I can share with the kids. Our book of the week is "Nobody's Nosier Than A Cat" written by Susan Campbell Bartoletti and Illustrated by Beppe Giacobbe. Along with the book of the week we continue to talk about what an author does, what a illustrator does, where is the front/back/spine of the book and we discuss how to hold and carry a book. Hopefully soon we will all learn not to sit on, step on and bend our books! This week we are also going to put the finishing touches on our snowmen with some ribbon scraps for a scarf, black paint for eyes and mouth and glittery orange paint for a carrot nose and the kids are going to cut out their own hat for the snowman to wear!
Thank you to all of you who signed up for the text alerts from WLOS! You will find it is a big help to have that service when your kids are in elementary school! Once in awhile the text alerts are late showing up, so please know that if we close early for inclement weather I will still be calling you to let you know. I have seen the closings on the ticker on the bottom of WLOS news and finally have gotten a text at 8:00 in the morning. It's rare that it happens, but it does happen.

I am still looking for a movie for our snow day party, which is going to be tentatively on February 18th. We are waiting to hear back from the main office to see if the Fellowship Hall is still available.
As of today, we are still sleeping in Mrs. Barbara's room and are waiting to things to get finalized to sleep in our room. Thank you for your patience while we get it all figured out! This is will be the first time this classroom has ever been used for sleeping and things need to be coordinated with the church as well.
If your child has been sent home sick or has been sick at home, they may not return to school until they have been fever, vomiting and diarrhea free for 24 hours without medication. This is to help prevent the other children and staff from becoming sick as well.
If you would like to pack your child's lunch for them, per our food program guidelines, please make sure they bring a nutritiously balanced lunch including fruit and/or veggies and some protein. If you pack them juice, it has to be labeled 100% juice or we can not give it to the children.
Chapstick, Germ-X and lotions for dry skin are not allowed in the classroom or in the reach of other children. If your child wants to use these things, please make sure they use it before coming to school, you can apply it to them when they arrive at school or you can fill out a permission slip for us to apply it at school. We can not allow the children to use them and we are not allowed to apply them on the children without a signed permission slip.
Please do not bring toys from home unless it is your child's leader day. We have plenty of toys and activities going in our classroom and the extra toys will be put in your child's tub.
Please leave gum and candy at home.
Things for the kids to practice at home:
Blowing noses
Buttoning
Zippering
Putting on a coat
Putting on their shoes and tying them
Learning their phone number
Learning their address
Cutting...give them magazines, newspaper, note cards to practice their cutting skills. Most of these kids love to just sit and cut paper!
