March 5, 2017

Good Morning! This has been such a beautiful weekend and I hope you are all enjoying the sunshine and fresh air! Our daughter, Jamie, has been accepted at UNC Charlotte to study in Elementary Education! She will be a fourth generation teacher on both sides of my family. Both sets of my grandparents and my parents all taught school. My mom's mother had a private school and my mom taught kindergarten and 1st grade for over 30 years. My dad's mom was a music teacher in the schools and he taught 7th grade social studies for over 30 years. Jamie is keeping the tradition going!

  • Friday was Mrs. Sandy's last day in our classroom and will be in her new classroom on Monday. Mrs. Susan will be starting in our class on Monday. She is coming to us from the 18-24 mos old room, She has been a substitute teacher in the public schools and was our after school teacher this past summer. She is looking forward to working with our big kids!

  • Our Raising A Reader Parent Meeting will be held on Monday, March 13th at 8:15 in the morning

  • Annual Art Show/Dinner/Music Show will be held on Friday, March 24th. A note with info went home last week with times, etc. This year's theme is the Wild West and we will be wearing jeans, and a white or plaid shirt and cowboy boots (if you have them). Your child can wear a bandanna and cowboy hat if they want to as well!

  • Picture Day Info was sent home on Friday. If you were not able to get it on Friday, please make sure you take home the info on Monday or Tuesday (when your child attends school). There will be two photographers again this year and one of them will be taking the graduation pictures for our children. When the pictures are returned this time, there will be two packets...one of spring pictures and one of graduation pictures with their cap/gown.

  • I will be out on Thursday, April 6 and Friday, April 8. My husband and I along with our youngest son Nathan will be going to a parent weekend at UNC Greensboro. Mrs. Mandy will be covering me on the 6th and Miss Makaeyla and Mrs. Judy will be covering me on the 7th.

  • Our new friend, Izzy, started in our classroom on Wednesday and the kids were so great about welcoming her and making her feel comfortable!

This past week we finished up our really cute Picasso masks and learned about Henri Matisse who created a lot of art using paper and scissors! The children make their own Henri Matisse "cutting with scissors" art work. This week we will learn about Seurat's and his style of painting called "pointillism".

This week will be starting to work on sight words and all the work we have been doing on letter sounds will help them decode these words. Phonemic Awareness is the biggest predictor of reading success or difficulty. Children need to know the sounds the letters make so they are able to sound out words when beginning to read. Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear and identify different letter sounds in the spoken and written word.

We will also be working on same/different and estimating and print concepts.

Please continue to work at home with the correct grip on pencils, and their scissor skills...thumbs up and elbows in. These are fine motor skills that are necessary for being part of a kindergarten classroom.

I don't have a copy of the leader calendar for March here at my house, so please check yours at home for this weeks leader schedule. I will update via email when I check it at school tomorrow,

If at any time you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to call or email me!

Have a great week!

Mrs. Wendy
