First days of school 2012

Welcome back to a new school year! I have no idea where the summer went but I am glad to be back in school with all your sweet children!

The first day went smoothly and we all had a good time! We are trying to work on making a smoother transition to the main building for lunch and nap, so please be patient with us if we make a new request or have a new idea! The goal is to make the transition easy for children and teachers and sometimes it takes a few ideas and a few tries to find what works best for everyone.

Some of my observations from our first few days are as such: The kids really like to make collages on paper with lots of fabric strips, cut up pieces of yarn, tape, foam shapes and lots and lots and lots of pom-poms! They also really like all the different magnetic pieces I found at my house (actually I "borrowed" them from my youngest son, Nathan) and at O.P. Taylor's in Asheville this summer. In addition, they really like the water beads (also known as Orbees) in the sensory tub and they really like to listen to stories!

The first few days are always a time to get acquainted with each other and to explore the classroom and this year was no exception! They have been having a good time exploring all the new toys and activities and making new friends! On Thursday and Friday we played some musical games with bean bags and the kids seemed to have fun with them. I know I always do!

On Friday I got out the magnetic white board, magnetic letters and some preschool sight words. Some of the children were interested in creating the sight word with the letters on the white board and then decided to make up their own words.

This coming week we will be working a beachy-type theme and will be writing letters and numbers in sand trays, "fishing" for different colored fish from a bucket (using chopstick type tongs..good for fine motor skills) and sorting them into the matching colored bowl. We will discuss which color we have more/less of and then we will graph how many of each color fish we were able to "catch".  In addition to those fun learning activities we will be listening to stories and doing some fun musical activities.

The leader calendar for the week of August 13th to August 17th:

Tuesday---Bryce
