January 31, 2015

It's hard to believe today is the last day of January! Before you know it, it will be summer!

My husband leaves on Sunday for two weeks in Sao Paulo Brazil. Please keep him in your thoughts as this is the largest and most dangerous city in Brazil. The I.T. team is not allowed to leave the hotel after dark, they must travel in a group at all times and an armored van is picking them up to take them to the plant and offices. Our oldest sons software company he works for and many other companies also have offices in this city, but thankfully Bobby does not have to do any international travel.

Tomorrow is the Super Bowl and we took a vote to see who the kids thought would win and the Seahawks came out 9-2! Since that is the team I am going with, I hope they win as well!

This past week was crazy with public school closings and delays, I was late on day and out another day, but somehow we managed to get most of our things accomplished! We did our science experiment by putting some stalks of bok choy into different cups of colored water. We used blue, red, green and yellow water. The red had the most dramatic change and yellow had the least. We let the experiment sit over a few days to get the best results. We talked about how the color gets up into the veins and leaves by capillary action.

We read the book Snowmen At Night then created our own Snowmen with white circles the kids cut out, used colored construction paper, ribbon and blingy things to decorate our snowmen and we used up most of the remaining bird feeder ingredients to made bird feeders and hung them on the big pine tree next to the steps near the front door of the main building.

This coming week we will be working on letters Ss and Bb, the numbers 28 and 29, the square shape and the sight word "run".  We will also be learning about the artist Henri Mattisse (I tried to get to it this past week but we ran out of time) and the musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. He wrote the scores for musicals such as Evita, Cats, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Jesus Christ Superstar and The Phantom Of The Opera.

We will also be starting a pen pal type exchange with an old elementary school high school friend of mine who moved to England several years after our high school graduation. She married and had 4 children of her own ranging in ages 5-15 and decided to leave the corporate world and open her own preschool of her own, along with her husband. She has sent me several children's books that are favorites with their classrooms and when we study England in April she has promised to send me "English stuff" to share with the kids! Mrs. Gail has bought us a really cute and soft black bear and a book about the Great Smoky Mountains for us to share with my friend and her preschool. We will be sending this book and bear along with a journal to share classroom experiences with her and she will send the bear back with some writings of her preschool. This bear will get a lot of flying time...wonder if we can qualify him for frequent flier miles! :) I am hoping the kids will get to learn about children in a different country from the kids perspective and not just hearing about it from a book.

If we can get the weather to cooperate, we can all get in a full week at school and have some fun!

Flashlight Friday is every Friday! I have a few extras to share but not enough for the whole class.

Keep sending in those big poofy winter coats, hats and gloves! The kids are much warmer outside when they are properly dressed!

We will be having a Valentines Party and Valentine exchange on Friday, the 13th. I will have a food sign-up posted near the sign in sheet if you would like to bring something for the party.
