Last week we worked on letter Ww, number 15 and the square shape. We continue to work on fine motor activities, stem, literacy and math in our small groups. The kids really enjoy the small group work and it makes my heart happy to see them really enjoy learning! Sometimes they have to work in pairs or in groups or individually. Part of the small groups is learning how to follow directions and not just sit down at the table and start grabbing materials. It's an important skill they will need for kindergarten to know how to wait for the teacher to give them instructions and how to listen for those instructions.
When your child gets to kindergarten, they may have a small class of 16-18 kids or be in a classroom with up to 24 kids. More importantly than learning academics, it's very important they learn how to function in a group setting...follow directions, sit at circle time on the carpet, walk down the hallway, and know how to solve conflicts and have good social/emotional skills. I have heard from several parents from last year who told me their child's teacher could tell they came from a preschool that has prepared them how to be in a large group setting with many children because these kids knew how to sit and wait their turn, how to listen to and follow directions, how to walk in the hallways, how to sit on the carpet at circle time, are enthusiastic about learning, can work independently and can play well with others. These kids are now reading and are doing well academically. Children who come to kindergarten not prepared with proper social/emotional skills, knowing how to attempt or solve a conflict, ask for help, how to follow directions and knowing how to function in a group setting can have more difficulties at first with academics, which unfortunately is a big push in kindergarten and unfortunately kindergarten is like first grade. We do the things we do to prepare each and every child for kindergarten and we have fun while doing it. We work with them everyday on how to handle a conflict, what words they can say, how to say it and teach them how to handle their emotions. We want every single child to be successful when they leave our classroom. We want them to be confident and know how wonderful they are and want them to love learning. Nothing makes me happier than for a parent to come back and tell me their child is doing so well and loving school and learning and I want that for all your children as well :)
This week we will be working on letter Mm, number 16 and the rectangle shape. We will be working on our Thanksgiving place mats in small groups as well as our usual activities to build fine motor skills, literacy and math.
- We need pictures of your families! You can email them to me or print out a copy and bring it in!
- Our Thanksgiving Feast is Tuesday, November 21! Our class eats at 12:20. Please return the yellow head count paper by the 17th. You don't need to include your child, just any additional children that may be attending.
- We will be closed Wed, Thurs and Friday November 22, 23 and 24 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
- Please make sure your child has a complete change of clothes in their cubby. We go outside as long as it's not pouring rain and your child may get mud on them or a water or milk spill. We do not keep many clothes on hand for kids this size so please make sure your child has their own set of clothes to change into if needed.
