Another weekend of grocery shopping in the rain, but Jamie, Nathan and I made the best of it today! We headed over to Asheville to the big Dollar Tree at the outlets and saw the new Field and Stream store, which just happens to be right near Dollar Tree so we went in to see what the fuss was all about! It was really busy so we quickly made the rounds and headed out. It was like a Bass Pro Shop but on a smaller scale...nice but too expensive for my tastes! After the Dollar Tree we went to my favorite used book store, Mr. K's..right off exit 53B off I-40. They had a lot of really nice books in for kids today. Sometimes it's hit or miss and today it was a hit! One of the nice things about this store is there is something for everyone of all ages and they give teachers a 10% discount! If you take in used books and they need them and they are in good condition you will get trade credit for the books and the credit is used towards buying more books! My husband finally is back in Pittsburgh after spending two weeks in Sao Paulo Brazil in the hot, non-air conditioned plant and offices. They worked 12-14 hours a day, including two weekends, to wrap up their latest project. He and I are both happy he is back in the US safe and sound. There is no word on where their next project will be and he is hoping he will get to stay in the US for awhile and not be globe trotting. It's been almost 3 years of monthly international travel to Italy, Germany, France and Brazil and he is worn out.

This past week we worked on letter Gg, number 11, the sight word the and the square shape. We also had our wonderful trip across the street to the Fire Station, taste tested some Pumpkin Spice Marshmallows, worked in our journals, listened to some Glady's Knight and the Pips music, did some yoga and talked about how the leaves change colors in the fall and why they lose their green color.

This week we will be working on letter Hh, number 12, the sight word 12 and the rectangle shape. We will also be doing a fall craft, doing hands-on literacy and math activties and getting ready to study Germany. (which will be the following week) As part of our study in our passports we will be making a trip to the Asheville Airport property to Landmark Aviation (www.landmarkaviation.com/fbo/avl). All our travels take us out of the United States which requires us to "fly" to the country we are visiting and it will be exciting for the kids to see the jets up close and to get inside one to see how they work!

October 12th:       Visit from Michelle Mull to learn sign language

October 13th:        Center is closed for teacher training

October 16th:        Spirit Day....black and gold for Tuscola or red and black for Pisgah

October 20th:        This is a tentative date for a field trip to Landmark Aviation (which is on the same property as the Asheville Airport) to learn about airplanes and tour a private jet. Parents are welcome to come along, drive your child to the airport or meet us at the airport. Mrs. Lovenda will be driving the church van for us on this day.

October 30th:        Halloween Party in the Fellowship Hall! Your child can wear a costume and bring a labeled treat bag or bucket for candy.  Please bring a back of wrapped candy (no peanuts or tree nuts please!) for us to hand out to the kids at each game.  If you would like to volunteer to help out, please let me know. We have several games and activities for the kids and can always use a volunteer or two at this event!

Information:

It's about that time of year to change out the clothes in your child's cubby! We may get the occasional warm day but for now cooler days are upon us!

Now that hats and gloves are starting to make their appearance in the stores, you might want to consider buying a spare set to keep in their cubby. We go outside even when the temperatures are below freezing and we don't typically keep extra sets of hats and gloves on hand and their little heads and hands get cold easily.

Not only are these alerts good for snow days but our school has used this for when the water was accidentally shut off by the construction going on down the street.
