The Brazil project recently wrapped up and my husband just found out the next place in Europe they are sending him for a project is Hungary or Romania. I am hoping he can get some good pictures and info we can use in the classroom...those aren't places we usually hear much about and I am interested in seeing how business works there and info about food, etc! Brazil had a lot of American chain restaurants and tended to be commercialized (in some parts) so it will be interesting to learn about an Eastern European country!
I hope all of our children that weren't feeling good this past week are well on their way to recovery! It was a rough week in our classroom but we made it through to the weekend! Despite the odds working against us, we managed to get some things accomplished! We learned about different instruments in an orchestra and how they all play an important part in making the music sound so wonderful! We learned there are brass instruments, wind instruments, string instruments and the percussion section. They learned some instruments have a mouthpiece that air goes into from the mouth, some have a reed, such as the oboe and the trumpets and french horns have valves to press down on to change the sound of the music coming out of the instrument. The kids where able to identify the trombone, trumpet, hard, flute, french horn, violin and a few other instruments. They also learned the role of the conductor and the composer and how the musicians use their sheet music to know what notes to play. The children learned that when they watch a tv show or go to the movies and hear the music in the beginning a composer wrote that music for every instrument they hear in the music. The children also made their own instrument...like a harmonica and they had a good time making music with them and the other instruments we have available in the classroom. Some of the kids took turns being conductors...telling the other kids to play louder or softer and faster or slower.
This week we are using our passports to travel to Italy! About this time last year my husband was in Milan for a project set to go live in December. They had one day to sight see in that city and they took another day and went to Venice. I have some pictures in a little album in the classroom for the children to look through if they want! They are always fascinated by the gondolas and the streets made of water! I have been trying and trying to get us some big refrigerator size boxes for the kids to paint and use as a gondola...if you know anyone that has one or two, please let me know or just drag it in if you can! Monday is our field trip to Rendezvous Restaurant at the Maggie Valley Inn. Mrs. Beth the owner has a background in education and special ed and will be great with the kids! We are going to finish putting together our Roman Laural Wreaths and wear them with our toga's (white shirts) to be a Roman Emporer! If I can get those boxes in, we will pretend to tour the city of Venice in our Gondola's! I have made several calls to several places and they can't guarantee they will have something available. :( Fingers crossed we can get at least one big box coming in this week!

Field Trip Monday the 9th: We are leaving school by 11:10 for Rendezvous Restaurant at the Maggie Valley Inn. We will be back by 1:30. Please leave your child's car seat/booster seat under our coat hooks in the hallway.
Bring in the white t-shirt for pizza making and toga day! It should be large enough to cover like a dress on the kids. We can roll up sleeves and tuck them in the pants when we are making pizzas!
